Planning a move to a new home is an exciting and busy time. In addition to packing, transporting and then organizing your new home, notifying contacts of your change in address is a crucial step during the moving process.
One very important contact to include on this list is CRA. If not notified, CRA will continue to use the address on file and you might not receive certain important correspondence or benefit payments on time including (but not limited to):
- Notice of Assessments/Reassessments
- GST/HST and/or provincial credit payments
- Canada child benefit payments
- Canada workers benefit advance payments.
In addition, the deadline for responding to certain CRA correspondence (i.e.: filing a Notice of Objection), may be time sensitive. Accordingly, ensuring you receive these documents in a timely manner is very important.
There are several options available to update your address with CRA:
1. Contact CRA directly by calling 1-800-959-8281:
- Be sure to have your social insurance number as well as a copy of your most recently assessed return, notice of assessment or other tax document in order to satisfy the security requirements.
- Please note that an Authorized Representative cannot make a change to your address by phone on your behalf.
2. Online with CRA’s My Account service - “Change my address” (registration required)
- For more information on the registration process to access the CRA My Account services, please visit CRA’s website.
3. By fax/mail by sending one of the following to your tax centre
- Form 325 Address Change Request; or
- A signed letter that includes your social insurance number, new address, and moving date. You can also change your spouse or common-law partner’s address by including their name, social insurance number and signature in the submitted letter.
- The CRA tax centre for residents of the GTA is:
Sudbury Tax Centre
1050 Notre Dame Avenue
Sudbury ON P3A 5C2
Fax number: 705-671-3994/1-855-276-1529
- To find the address or fax number of the CRA tax centre for your area, please visit CRA’s website
4. By filing your annual tax return
- If filing electronically, the return must be filed by an authorized EFILE provider (i.e.: accounting or tax preparation service) on your behalf. You cannot change your address by using the NETFILE service provided by CRA to file your personal tax return.
- If submitting a paper return, by indicating your new address on your tax forms.
Note that if you are self-employed and have a business HST or payroll account, the address associated with these accounts will have to be updated separately.
Finally, if you owned and sold your previous residence during the year, this sale must be reported on your personal tax return, regardless of whether you are eligible to claim the principal residence exemption.
Please notify your Shimmerman Penn advisor of the change in your address as soon as possible so that we may update our records accordingly.
Congratulations and enjoy your new home!
