Shimmerman Penn Introduces Students to Accounting

Last month, Shimmerman Penn was pleased to host two high school students and introduce them to the profession of Accountancy.

First we hosted Amir Fathollahzadeh's daughter, Alessia, at our office for Take Our Kids to Work Day. Amir and Scott Kerkhof had planned a day for Alessia to help her discover what an accounting career is like. As part of her program for the day, Alessia ran a snack shack in the lunch room. Each member of staff was given $10 virtual dollars to spend at the snack shack, where Alessia applied staff purchases against their accounts.

Alessia enjoyed her day and wrote an email to the office saying, "Thank you everyone for participating in my project and making my business a success. The experience helped me understand what happens in an accounting firm and what a career in accounting might mean."

On a separate occasion, Bonnie Zelman hosted a student as part of the Grade 10 Careers and Civics curriculum. The student interviewed Bonnie, and then Bonnie gave the student a tour of the office and spent the rest of the time showing him the software that we use, explained some actual work procedures, and what a typical CPA workday is like.
