Shimmerman Penn 2018 Annual Tax Breakfast
  • Event Summary

Please join us for our annual Tax Breakfast at The Verity Club!

At this year’s event, we look forward to reviewing a number of important tax changes ushered into law this past year, altering the landscape of private company taxation in Canada.

Andrew Bernstein will provide an update on the new Tax On Split Income (“TOSI”) rules. Introduced at last year’s event, these rules are now applicable for the 2018 calendar year and can have a significant impact on income splitting arrangements involving business income. This year’s presentation will build on the information provided last year. We now have legislation behind the new TOSI regime, and some additional guidance on how the new rules will operate. We will focus on identifying TOSI issues in common business structures, and discuss available exclusions from TOSI. We will highlight surviving opportunities for splitting business income permitted under the new legislation.

Mark McGinnis will review other recent tax changes affecting small businesses, including a discussion of the impact of the new Passive Investment Income rules in the 2018 budget, highlight the new regime for refundable taxes, and review the phase out of billed basis accounting for certain professionals.

We will conclude with a brief update on current CRA audit activity.
